Swollen Gums and the Simple Home Remedies

Never underestimate the problem of swollen gums because it can be debilitating. The pain can be excruciating that it will affect you, physically and emotionally. Who can work with the pain around the face? Who can concentrate when there is a throbbing pain inside your mouth? Just like the toothache, painful gums can lead to other medical issues if left untreated. Not to mention that it can recur again, which is something you don’t want to experience, do you?

Swollen Gums and the Problems in General

Everyone knows that caring for the teeth is important, but somehow, they fail to do so. Most people are focusing on caring for their teeth and yet they fail to care for their gums. You need to understand that everything inside your mouth is one whole package. When you take care of the teeth, you are supposed to do the same thing for the gums, and vice versa. Gums are basically the foundation for your teeth. If something happens to it, all of your teeth are in jeopardy. Gums are also the channel connecting your teeth to the other nerves, consisting of blood vessels that will carry food and oxygen.

When your gums are swollen, they are generally accompanied by pain or discomfort. Be aware that it is not normal. Healthy problems won’t cause such discomfort or pain. Moreover, you should be aware if your gums are somewhat darker in shade, such as dark pink. If they are already purple or blue, it is a sure sign that there is something wrong with it. You should also see that there is no papilla (also known as small protrusion) in between each tooth, or you should see only black triangle. When you constantly experience bleeding when flossing or brushing, and it is obvious that you have swollen gums, it is time for you to see the doctor.

Swollen gums are generally caused by bacterial activity that results in plaque, which can cause infections as well as reducing the gum lines. Oral infection is also the most common causes where the receding gums will be the outcome of such an attack. Incorrect brushing can also cause this issue, especially if you brush roughly or carelessly.

Hormonal changes (such as the common cause happening to pregnant moms or those who are going through menopause) and mouth ulcers can also contribute to the problem. Food, burns (too hot beverage or food), malnutrition, or tooth misalignment can also cause this issue. Generally, tooth misalignment only affects the aesthetic part but when the direction is wrong and it is somehow causing the gums to recede, then you should get medical assistance right away.

The Different Treatments and Solutions

Swollen Gums and the Simple Home Remedies. Lemon Juice, Ginger, Hydrogen Peroxide, Compress, Salt Water for Swollen Gums.

When treating swollen gums problems, you have two options: medical treatments and home remedies. Whatever methods you choose, they will work well for you. However, it depends on personal preference, really. Some people are more into home remedies while some prefer the medical solutions. Feel free to always go to the doctor to get the best treatments but then again, there are also simple and inexpensive home remedies to try.

1. Salt Water

Never underestimate the salt water because it can help soothing the inflamed and swollen gums. You only need to mix warm water and a tablespoon of salt and use the combination to rinse your mouth. This is a pretty harmless method, which means that you can repeat the procedures several times within a day. Rinse your mouth after every meal. Start your day in the morning with this method and also end your day before going to bed with this routine.

Thanks to the natural anti-inflammatory trait, this mix can neutralize the pH level within your mouth. Although the effect is temporary, it is effective enough to alleviate the discomfort and pain.

2. Compress

Doing a cold and warm compress in turn can soothe your condition. They work best to reduce the swelling as well as the pain. Naturally, apply the compress on your face, not on the swollen gums directly. First, you should use a clean and soft cloth and soak it within warm water – a bit hot is okay. Apply the compress on your face for around 5 minutes.

Wait for around 30 minutes before doing the cold compress. You can wrap ice cubes inside a cloth or use the frozen food bags. Apply the compress to the affected area until you feel a slight numbness. If necessary, repeat this cycle for several times within a day. You should feel your condition a bit improved.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

If you want to maintain your oral health, use the 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide. This can alleviate the pain and inflammation, as well as fighting oral issues and killing germs at the same time. You can mix the hydrogen peroxide with water within the same part. Use it for swishing or rinsing; do it for around 30 seconds before using warm water to rinse it off. It is one of the most effective treatments for swollen gums.

Another solution is to mix a teaspoon baking soda with just enough hydrogen peroxide so it will form a paste. Apply and rub it on your gums. Let it be for a minute and then rinse it off with water. Repeat the treatment twice or three times within a week.

4. Ginger

Ginger is rich in anti-inflammatory trait that will fight off the infection. It is also rich in antioxidants that will reduce the swelling and alleviate the discomfort. Only use a small part of ginger, crush it, and mix it up with half teaspoon of salt. You should get a coarse paste that should be applied on the affected gums. Leave it for 20 minutes before washing it off with warm water.

5. Clove Oil

Thanks to the antimicrobial trait, you can fight off any harmful and annoying microbes with the oil. It also contains natural analgesic that can reduce the pain. You only need several drops within a session of treatment. Use only two to three drops on the affected area and then continue with gentle and light massage. If you want to, you can mix the oil with black pepper to further reduce the pain, discomfort, and inflammation. It is possible to accompany this treatment with chewing the clove directly. It will even promote faster treatment for your swollen gums.

6. Lawsonia Inermis Leaf

A lot of people may be more familiar with the name henna. The leaves have natural antibiotic trait that can help remove all of the toxins and also the harmful bacteria. You only need to boil the leaves in a glass of water for around 15 minutes. Use the water for gargling and do this twice within a day. It is best that you use it after waking up in the morning and before going to bed at night.

7. Lemon Juice

Lemon has been used for centuries to treat health conditions. After all, it contains healthy substances that can actually improve your condition. It can restore the pH balance within your mouth as well as killing the microbes and reducing the swelling, thanks to the natural antimicrobial property. Simply mix a tablespoon of lemon juice with warm water. You can also add two drops of the rose essence, if you feel like it. Use the mix to gargle (twice a day) to treat the swollen gums.

8. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has been known for its natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties, which can be effective to soothe the swelling, reduce the pain, and kill the microbes. Simply extract the gel and apply it directly on the affected area. Leave it for as long as you want but make sure that you don’t swallow it. Wash your mouth afterwards. Feel free to do this about twice a day.

There are still many solutions and home remedies to treat your gum. If it is only swollen, these home remedies can help. However, if you are dealing with receding gums, you need to get medical treatments right away because home remedies won’t be able to help. If you are still doubtful about the cause and condition of your swollen gums, it is better to see a dentist right away.
