Be aware that not all methods are safe when you are dealing with the pesky pests. Some people may suggest using the poison because they think that it is easy, efficient, and effective. You only need to place the poison on a certain point and your mice will die from eating the poison somewhere else. But is it the best way of how to get rid of mice?

However, you need to remember that there are some things that make the poison a dangerous method to choose. First of all, it poses great risks for everyone, including kids and pets. Even when you have tried your best to hide the poison, there is no guarantee that it won’t be found by kids and pets. Moreover, the pets may sniff at the bait, attracted to the smell. How do you know that they won’t eat or lick the poisonous bait?

Second, using the poison is considered inhumane because poison will make them die in agony. Although some people think that poison is one of the best methods on how to get rid of mice, it is cruel. Imagine the agony and the pain. It is true that you are annoyed by the mice but it doesn’t mean that you should put them in a misery.

Third, not only the poison will bring negative effect on the environment, it also causes bad long chain-after-effect. Let’s say that the pesky mice are finally dead, but then the carcasses are eaten by other predator or enemies, such as the owl or the cat. As the result, they will also get sick from eating the poisonous mice. Aren’t you concerned about the negative impact on the food cycle, no matter how small it is?

Effective Methods to Combat the Mice

You probably don’t know this but there are actually some natural methods on how to get rid of mice. The recipes are various and they are quite effective.

1. Traps

There are several mice traps that can easily catch the rodents easily without harming them. If you don’t want to kill them, then you don’t have to do such a thing. Do your own research of which traps to use and where to find them. Simply put bait inside the traps so catching the mice will be easy.

2. Peppermint Oil

Be sure to have enough supply of the oil. Have around 20 drops on the cotton balls and then leave them in any suspected places. If you find any droppings, it is also a good sign that the place has been the mice’s favorite place. If the smell has faded away, replace the cotton balls with the new ones.

Anything peppermint will be a good option. Use toothpaste or leaves if you can’t find the oil. For preventive measurement, consider having mint plants around your house. Having the plants is a good option on how to get rid of mice. A word of advice: “keep the cotton balls away from the pets”.

3. Herbs and Ingredients

Do you know that some of your household ingredients can be a potent solution for these pesky rodents? Potatoes, for instance, can be used to repel the mice away because they will make the rodents sick. Using the rotten onions will also work like a charm because the rotten onions are somewhat toxic. They also have a strong smell, which the mice hate. Just like the cotton ball, replace the rotten onions when the scent fades away.

4. Ammonia

So, how to get rid of mice with this solution? Fill in some small bottles with ammonia, close it with the lid and then make some small holes on the lid. The strong pungent smell is a natural repellent for the mice. Make sure to place the bottles in some suspected areas, including the doors.

5. False Scent of the Predator

Mice are afraid of snakes, owls, and cats. If you want to prevent the mice from entering the house or roaming around the house, you can buy cat litter or snake poo from the pet shop and place them on the suspected places. Placing them close to windows, doors, or any entrance around the house will prevent them from entering.

However, some people say that this shouldn’t be the only solution because mice suffering from the toxoplasmosis will be attracted to the litter, as well as the cats. If you use this method, be sure to accompany it with other ways. But you can consider using the snake poo, though. No mice will be attracted to the snake in any way.

6. Leaves and Cloves

Cloves are natural mice repellent. If you want to know how to get rid of mice, scatter them around the house. Clove oil can also be used just like the peppermint oil so you have some possible variations to deal with the issue.

Have you ever heard about the bay leaves? They are also good to get rid of the mice, and they are pretty harmless. Place 2 or 3 bay leaves on any hidden corners or dark spots. Replace the leaves in 3 days with the new ones.

7. Mothballs

Whether you want to have them intact or you want to crush, it is up to you. Mothballs are quite effective in getting rid of the rodents. If you suspect some of the infested areas, including the sink, then you should scatter the mothballs there. However, be very careful when scattering the mothballs because they are toxic and dangerous. Make sure that your pets or kids are away from the area.

8. Homemade Deterrent

You should mix a cup of detergent with water (four liters) and also three tablespoons of Tabasco sauce. Pour it into a spray bottle and then spray it on the suspected areas. Keep in mind, though, that this solution works best for the corners or areas with low traffic. Don’t spray it on the tiles or any smooth floor because the detergent is slippery. You don’t want to harm yourself or your family, right?

Another solution is mix hot pepper flakes, habaneras, and jalapenos. Chop them all and mix them with fresh water. A liter or two will be fine. Put the mixture in a pan before boiling them all. Let it cool and then strain it. Pour the mixture in the spray bottle and spray whenever necessary.

Always remember, though, never spray the mixture on the carpet because it will cause a discoloration. It is also advisable that you use masks and gloves to prevent irritation, especially if you are sensitive to the spices. Feel free to make these recipes as much as you want because they are completely natural. You don’t have to worry that they may harm the pets or kids even after the spray.

Preventive Measurement

Aside from using the home remedy recipes, there are also some ways to prevent the rodent infestation from happening. For instance, never leave the food unattended or without cover. Mice are attracted to the foods. If they think that they have found a food source, it is likely that they will come back again.

If you want to keep the food, place it inside a cabinet or a tightly sealed container. It is also a good idea to have a lid or cover on the garbage bin. Have you inspected the holes or cracks that can provide an easy entrance for the mice? Cover or seal them. By closing their access, you should be able to keep them at bay. Make sure that you always maintain the cleanliness of your house too. Poor hygiene will attract the pesky critters. However, now that you know how to get rid of mice safely and effectively, you can combat the problem rather easily.
